 2023 Preview 


       J.B. Pennington completed the 2022 season with a 9-2 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 3A region seven, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. J.B. Pennington's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Colbert County by a score of 57-28.

       The defense was very stingy last season as J.B. Pennington ranked 27th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 14.1 points a game.

       Since 2010, J.B. Pennington has gone a combined 62-81. Their 43.4% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, J.B. Pennington has managed to compile a record of 109-161. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 3A and 292nd in the AHSAA.




       The Tigers are led by head coach Caleb Miles who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 9-2 record in his first season at J.B. Pennington. The Tigers saw improvement from a 8-4 record the season before coach Miles arrived. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Miles.

       The Tigers enter the 2023 season riding a 7 game regular season winning streak.

       The Tigers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region seven this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2015 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2023.

       The Tigers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Hayden on Friday, August 25 at W.R. Sutton Memorial Stadium. Last year the Hayden Wildcats finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 5A region five. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss to Corner by a score of 36-14.

       J.B. Pennington and Hayden have met a total of 33 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 24-8-1 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with J.B. Pennington winning by a score of 19-12.

       J.B. Pennington lost 3A All-State  running back Joshua Marquez to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate linebacker Drake Sanderson.

       The Tigers return 3A All-State Senior defensive lineman Grant Austin. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
